How to Dementia-proof your Home

  • Keep all benches and surfaces as clear as possible
  • Put the toaster and electric kettle in a cupboard
  • Matches and candles should be put away
  • Consider using child-proof locks on cupboards
  • Keep all clothes in drawers and wardrobes
  • Keep keys safe, out of sight and out of reach
  • Cleaning products and detergents should be kept safe
  • Remove all tripping hazards, like loose mats and carpet squares
  • Secure garden taps with locks
  • Secure garden tools and pesticides
  • Use clear labels on everyday objects, for example “Fred’s cup”
  • Consider installing automatic lighting controls
  • Ensure rooms are well-lit, preferably with natural light
  • No open fires or flames
