Put items of concern out of sight … avoid clutter, it just causes confusion for the person with dementia.
- Keep all benches and surfaces as clear as possible
- Put the toaster and electric kettle in a cupboard
- Matches and candles should be put away
- Consider using child-proof locks on cupboards
- Keep all clothes in drawers and wardrobes
- Keep keys safe, out of sight and out of reach
- Cleaning products and detergents should be kept safe
- Remove all tripping hazards, like loose mats and carpet squares
- Secure garden taps with locks
- Secure garden tools and pesticides
- Use clear labels on everyday objects, for example “Fred’s cup”
- Consider installing automatic lighting controls
- Ensure rooms are well-lit, preferably with natural light
- No open fires or flames
